Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL) • Mesh Analysis for 2 to 8 Loops
Solve any multi-loop electrical circuit using Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law. Choose the number of loops, enter each loop’s resistances and voltage sources, then enter the resistors shared between loops. The calculator writes the KVL equations and solves them.
  • 1All mesh currents are assumed clockwise.
  • 2Voltage drop across every resistor is taken as negative (−R·I).
  • 3A battery takes the sign of the second terminal met while moving clockwise (− to + = positive).
  • 4A common resistor carries the difference of two mesh currents: −R(Iown − Iother).

Common Branches (Shared Resistors)

Common Branch Currents
KVL Mesh Equations
The equations are solved by Gaussian elimination. The common branch current is taken as |Ia − Ib|; its sign tells you which mesh current’s direction it follows.
Note: In each loop enter only the resistors that belong to that loop alone. Enter every shared resistor once in Common Branches; it is added to both loops automatically. Enter voltage sources in each loop with the sign seen while moving clockwise in that loop. If a battery lies in a common branch, enter it in both loops with the sign seen from each loop. Leave unused fields blank.
